Charter School:
A charter school provides free elementary and/or secondary education to eligible students under a specific charter granted by the state legislature or other appropriate authority.
County:
The county in which the district's administrative office resides. This is not necessarily the same as the county in which all the schools or students are located.
Food Service (District Expenditure):
A sub-function of the function non-instructional services. Food services are activities that provide food to students and staff in a school or LEA. These services include preparing and serving regular and incidental meals or snacks in connection with school activities as well as delivery of food to schools.
Reduced Lunch:
This fields displays the total number of students eligible for reduced-price lunch under the National School Lunch Act.
Free Lunch:
This fields displays the total number of students eligible for free lunch under the National School Lunch Act.
Grades Taught:
The lowest and highest grade level offered in the school or district.
District Locale Code:
This field displays a locale code for the agency based on the locale codes of the schools in the agency. If 50 percent or more of students attend schools in a single locale code, that code is assigned to the district. If no one locale code makes up 50 percent of students than schools are grouped with locale codes 1 and 2 in one group; 3, 4, and 8 in another group; and 5, 6 and 7 in another group. The group that has the largest number of students is determined, and a district locale code is assigned based on the largest number of students in that group. If the number of students between two or more groups is the same, then the largest (i.e. most rural) locale code is assigned.
School Locale Code:
The Locale Code defines how the school is situated in a particular location relative to 1990 Census populous areas, based on the school's location address. No Locale Codes have been assigned to the outlying areas. The Code translations are as follows:
Large City
A central city of a Core Based Statistical Area (CBSA) or Consolidated Statistical Area (CSA), with the city having a population greater than or equal to 250,000.
Mid-size City
A central city of a CBSA or CSA, with the city having a population less than 250,000.
Urban Fringe of a Large City
Any incorporated place, Census Designated Place, or non-place territory within a CBSA or CSA of a Large City and defined as urban by the Census Bureau.
Urban Fringe of a Mid-size City
Any incorporated place, Census Designated Place, or non-place territory within a CBSA or CSA of a Mid-size City and defined as urban by the Census Bureau.
Large Town
An incorporated place or Census Designated Place with a population greater than or equal to 25,000 and located outside a CBSA or CSA.
Small Town
An incorporated place or Census Designated Place with a population less than 25,000 and greater than or equal to 2,500 and located outside a CBSA or CSA.
Rural, outside CBSA
Any incorporated place, Census designated place, or non-place territory not within a CBSA or CSA of a Large or Mid-size City and defined as rural by the Census Bureau.
Rural, inside CBSA
Any incorporated place, Census designated place, or non-place territory within a CBSA or CSA of a Large or Mid-size City and defined as rural by the Census Bureau.
Magnet Schools:
Regardless of the source of funding, a magnet school or program is a special school or program designed to attract students of different racial/ethnic background for the purpose of reducing, preventing, or eliminating racial isolation and/or to provide an academic or social focus on a particular theme.
Metro Status:
The classification of the agency's service area relative to a Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Migrant Students:
The number of migrant students in the prior year.
NCES School District ID:
This field displays the 7 digit school identification number. The first 2 digits of the 7 digit school district ID identify the state and the last 5 identify the district ID. Put together, they make a 7 digit unique ID code for each school district.
NCES School ID:
This field displays the 5 digit school identification number. When combined with the NCES School District ID, the two codes comprise a unique 12 digit code for each school. The first 7 digits of the 12 digit school ID are the district ID, and the last five are the school ID.
School Types:

Public elementary/secondary school that does not focus primarily on vocational, special, or alternative education.

Public elementary/secondary school that focuses primarily on the following: hard of hearing, deaf, speech-impaired, health-impaired, orthopedically impaired, mentally retarded, seriously emotionally disturbed, multi-handicapped, visually handicapped, deaf and blind, and adapts curriculum, materials or instruction for students served.

Public elementary/secondary school that focuses primarily on vocational education, provides education in one or more semi-skilled technical operations.

Public elementary/secondary school that addresses the needs of students which typically cannot be met in a regular school, provides nontraditional education, serves as an adjunct to a regular school, and falls outside of the categories of regular, special education, vocational education.

The number of teachers per one student in the school or district.
Title I School:
A Title I school is designated under appropriate state and federal regulations as being eligible for participation in programs authorized by Title I of Public Law 103-382.
School-Wide Title I Program:
The School-Wide Title I is a program in which all the pupils in a school are designated under appropriate state and federal regulations as being eligible for participation in programs authorized by Title I of Public Law 103-382.
Total Students:
The total number of students enrolled at the beginning of the school year. It represents the sum of Un-Graded and Pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade students.
School Level:
A School's level is based on the grade levels that attend that school:
Primary
The lowest grade being Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd Grade, and the highest grade being Pre-Kindergarten through 8th Grade.
Middle
The lowest grade being 4th Grade through 7th Grade, and the highest grade being 4th Grade through 9th Grade.
High
The lowest grade being 7th Grade through 12th Grade, and the highest grade being 12th Grade only.
Other
Any other configuration not falling within the above three categories, including Un-Graded.
